2021 Income Tax Campaign Starts Today. Changes to keep in mind when filing

The 2021 Income Tax filing period starts today, Wednesday, April 6, and runs through Thursday, June 30, as noted on the Tax Agency's website(AEAT).

What’s new in the 2021 Income Tax campaign?

  • Energy efficiency home renovations.

Taxpayers can deduct up to 60% of energy efficiency renovations on their homes:

    • 20% deduction for work to reduce heating and cooling demand.
    • 40% deduction for work to reduce consumption of non-renewable energy.
    • 60% deduction for energy rehabilitation work.
  • Pension plans.

Personal pension plans, from this year, can only deduct up to €2,000 per year, compared to €8,000 in 2020.

  • Cryptocurrencies.

One big change this year is the specific box for taxpayers to report their cryptocurrency movements. Taxpayers already had to declare any earnings from cryptocurrencies, but this was previously done in a generic section called “Other economic goods and rights”.

As published in the BOE in March, the value of each cryptocurrency the taxpayer held as of December 31, 2021 must be reported in box 46, section ‘Goods and rights’.

  • New bracket for high earners.

A new tax bracket has been added for those earning over €300,000, with a 47% tax rate (two percent higher than the previous year).

  • Tax on savings.

A new bracket has also been added for savings over €200,000, with a 26% tax rate (three percent higher than in 2020).

  • Aid for Filomena or La Palma.

The exceptional aid awarded in the case of incapacity or death due to the storm ‘Filomena’ or the aid awarded in the case of personal or property damage due to the eruption of the volcano on the island of La Palma are tax-exempt.
