Property taxes in Catalonia

Highest revenue from property tax since 2008. The Catalonian Generalitat Government collected 1,474 million Euros in property tax last year, the highest revenue since 2008.

According to the Generalitat Department of Economics, tax revenue from housing sales last year was 15.6% higher than in 2014, when 1,275 million Euros were collected.

Capital Transfer Tax (ITP) is paid on second-hand housing sales (at 10% since August 2013) while Stamp Duty (AJD) is levied on mortgage loans, normally at a rate of 1.5%.

Increased revenue from stamp duty is the result of a more buoyant housing market and while still far from the volumes collected during the real estate boom, it did gain momentum in 2015.

With stamp duty currently at 1.5%, Catalonia is one of the regions with the highest tax burden on property purchases.
