Alting Real Estate Group has made a donation to the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Research Institute – IIB Sant Pau to create a biobank of COVID-19 samples that contribute to researching this disease today and in the future.
The purpose of this project is to collect, process and store samples from patients who have tested positive for SARS-CoV2 under conditions that guarantee their long-term quality in order to facilitate research into COVID-19 for researchers who request it in the quest for a drug, vaccine and/or information on the effects of COVID-19 on certain types of patients.
The project
Surplus blood samples used to diagnose patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV2 from Barcelona’s Hospital de Sant Pau will be collected after previously being inactivated.
The samples will be stored at -86ºC after they are processed in the biobank’s biosecurity laboratory to get plasma and cells that fit the needs of the researchers requesting samples.
The samples will be processed following the standard working protocols of the National Biobank Network, which have been adopted by the Sant Pau biobank to ensure the utmost quality of the samples processed.
In order to collect and process the samples, personal protective equipment (disposable gowns, FFP2 masks, surgical masks and gloves), disinfecting supplies (for hands and surfaces), reagents to process the samples (serum, mediums, tubes) and equipment to label and cold-store the samples have to be purchased, and technical staff has to be hired to process the samples.
What is a biomedical research biobank?
A biobank is a public or private nonprofit establishment which collects human biological samples for biomedical research purposes following quality criteria.
Biobanks use standardized protocols to process and preserve the biological samples so they can guarantee that the results of the studies conducted with them can be reproduced.
