Renta-2019

Tomorrow the 2019 Income Tax campaign begins, this year at an exceptional time

Tomorrow, April 1, begins the period when Spaniards can file their 2019 Income Tax returns, in the midst of the economic, social and healthcare crisis caused by COVID-19.

The Spanish Tax Office (AEAT) has kept the start of this year’s campaign on April 1, and it will go until June 30, as published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on March 19.

Gestha has calculated that 14.8 million taxpayers will receive 11.927 billion euros in refunds, and that 70% of the 21.24 million returns which will be filed will have overpaid and be getting a refund. According to the calendar set by the AEAT, the first refunds will be sent out after April 3.

So how will the state of alarm affect tax returns?

The Treasury Department is keeping the Income Tax calendar so that taxpayers can receive their returns as soon as possible at a time like this, when many administrative matters cannot be processed because of the state of alarm.

The Income and Wealth Tax campaign will last until June 30 for returns without direct deposits in the first period and until June 25 for returns with direct deposits.

Ways of filing your 2019 Income Tax return:

Via the Income Tax website or its mobile app

Starting on April 1, all taxpayers can access their draft tax return via the Renta web (online Income Tax website). To do so, they have to identify themselves with their electronic certificate, PIN or reference number. This draft return can be changed, confirmed and filed if all the information is accurate.

In person

Right now, the Tax Agency offices are closed because of the state of alarm. As we wait to see how the situation develops, starting on May 5 you can phone in to make an appointment to file in person. You can start filing 2019 Income and Wealth Tax return in AEAT offices on May 13.

“We’ll call you” campaign

The “We’ll call you” campaign offers the option of filing your tax return by telephone. In this case, you have to make an appointment any time after May 5, and an AEAT agent will get in touch with the taxpayer to fill out the return without the need to go to a brick-and-mortar office.

Which taxpayers are required to file?

Taxpayers who earned more than 22,000 euros, or 14,000 euros if there is more than one employer; those who receive income-replacement cash benefits; and those whose employers are not required to withhold taxes (among other circumstances).

For matters that could not be processed or when taxpayers are having difficulty completing the return, the AEAT’s website tells taxpayers, “if there is any matter pending of which you are aware, remember that the deadlines to file certain tax matters have been extended in accordance with Article 33 of Royal Decree-Law 8/2020 on urgent extraordinary measures to deal with the economic and social impact of COVID-19”..
