{"id":2197,"date":"2020-04-16T10:00:10","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T08:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alting.com\/alting-donate-biobank-sant-pau\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T14:52:39","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T13:52:39","slug":"alting-donate-biobank-sant-pau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alting.com\/en\/alting-donate-biobank-sant-pau\/","title":{"rendered":"Alting is partnering with Sant Pau to create a biobank for COVID-19 research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barcelona, April 16 2020.- <strong>Alting Real Estate Group<\/strong> has made a donation to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recercasantpau.cat\/en\/\">Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Research Institute<\/a> \u2013 IIB Sant Pau to <strong>create a biobank of COVID-19 samples that contribute to researching this disease today and in the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The purpose of this project is to collect, process and store samples<\/strong> from patients who have tested positive for <strong>SARS-CoV2<\/strong> under conditions that guarantee their long-term quality in order to facilitate research into COVID-19 for researchers who request it in the quest for a drug, vaccine and\/or information on the effects of COVID-19 on certain types of patients.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5675 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IR-2.jpg\" alt=\"Institut-Recerca-Sant-Pau\" width=\"766\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>The project<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Surplus blood samples<\/strong> used to diagnose patients who tested <strong>positive for SARS-CoV2<\/strong> from Barcelona&#8217;s Hospital de Sant Pau will be collected after previously being inactivated.<\/p>\n<p>The samples will be stored at -86\u00baC after they are processed in the biobank&#8217;s biosecurity laboratory <strong>to get plasma and cells<\/strong> that fit the needs of the <strong>researchers requesting samples<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The samples will be processed following the <strong>standard working protocols<\/strong> <strong>of the National Biobank Network<\/strong>, which have been adopted by the Sant Pau biobank to ensure the utmost quality of the samples processed.<\/p>\n<p>In order <strong>to collect and process the samples<\/strong>, <strong>personal protective equipment<\/strong> (disposable gowns, FFP2 masks, surgical masks and gloves), <strong>disinfecting supplies<\/strong> (for hands and surfaces), <strong>reagents to process the samples<\/strong> (serum, mediums, tubes) and equipment to label and cold-store the samples have to be purchased, and <strong>technical staff<\/strong> has to be hired to process the samples.<\/p>\n<h3>What is a biomedical research biobank?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>A biobank is a public or private nonprofit establishment<\/strong> which collects <strong>human biological samples for biomedical research purposes<\/strong> following quality criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Biobanks <strong>use standardized protocols<\/strong> to process and preserve the biological samples so they can guarantee that the results of the studies conducted with them can be reproduced.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5685 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IR-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"Institut-Recerca-Sant-Pau-3\" width=\"766\" height=\"428\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Alting in social projects<\/h3>\n<p>Alting, which <strong>actively participates in a variety of social projects<\/strong>, supports research aimed at our present and future.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Alting also wishes to express its admiration for all the staff, healthcare workers and researchers working together to combat COVID-19.<\/p>\n<h3>Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Research Institute<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Research Institute<\/strong>, created on June 4, 1992, is a private scientific foundation whose mission is to promote basic, clinical and epidemiological research and healthcare services in the field of the health sciences and biomedicine with the ultimate goal of helping improve people&#8217;s health.
